CHRISTMAS AT THE SPALDING WORKHOUSE 1928

At the workhouse the festivities commenced at 7.30am when the patients and inmates sat down to breakfast, which consisted of salt pork, bread and butter, and tea.
Dinner was served at mid-day, roast beef, roast pork, Brussel sprouts, baked parsnips, mashed potato, plum pudding and custard, making a very satisfying meal.
In the afternoon, a service was conducted by the Rev Ash, vicar of Fulney, who was assisted by the Rev H Burn,Congregational pastor, and carols were sung. Bread and butter, jam tarts, mincepies, cake and tea made an enjoyable tea, and all the meals were much appreciated by everyone.
Visitors present during the day included: Cllr W M Tomlin and family, C A Banks and family, R S Donington, Mr & Mrs C R Thompson,
A G Berrill, E Fisher. In the course of a short speech, Mr Thompson commented upon the good conduct of the House, and wished everybody a very Merry Christmas.
